Long Island rail workers go on strike

Workers on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), the nation’s largest commuter rail system, walked off the job early Saturday, forcing more than 330,000 riders to find other ways to travel. Just after midnight, five unions representing about 3,700 employees, including engineers, ticket clerks, signal workers, electricians and machinists, began the strike, marking only the fourth work stoppage in the railroad’s history.
