A powerful and rare winter storm swept across the South on Tuesday, prompting the first-ever Blizzard Warning for the Gulf Coast and blasting communities from Texas to Florida to the Carolinas with record-shattering snow that snarled travel and brought daily life to a halt. The Winter Storm is a threat to the safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Pensacola and has the potential to cause extensive damage to property, public buildings, public utilities, public streets and roads, and other public infrastructure," Reeves said in a statement.

It is not the perfect storm at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Visitors who attended the College Football Playoff Championship game and others are facing cancelations and delays as a winter storm moves through Georgia. In the Houston area, there will be hard freeze likely with temperatures near 20 early Wednesday and many icy roads. Temperatures should climb to near 43 Wednesday afternoon along with abundant sunshine. This should help to melt most of the remaining snow and ice. Parts of all states in the Lower 48 woke up to subfreezing temperatures Tuesday due to a weather pattern that will keep arctic air in place across the eastern half of the country at least until the end of the month.
