A U.S. landfall from Hurricane Lee is not expected as of the latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory and instead, the forecast calls for Lee to hit Canada. But on Monday land was included in Lee’s forecast cone for the first time in the storm’s history.

The latest forecast shows the hurricane will continue to strengthen and could have winds around 180 mph by Friday night. Hurricane Lee has now developed in the Atlantic Ocean as the storm continues to strengthen through the week and is on track to form into a major hurricane before the weekend. Lee is forecast to reach major hurricane strength ? defined as Category 3 or higher ? by Friday afternoon. Over the weekend, winds could reach Category 4 or 5 strength. Over the weekend, people were told to shelter in place and conserve food, water and fuel amid heavy rainstorms. Both the airport and entrance of Black Rock City, Nevada, where the event is held, were closed because of the conditions.
