Kilmar Abrego Garcia released from Tennessee jail
Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been released from a Tennessee jail and is en route to Maryland to reunite with his family as he awaits trial on human smuggling charges. Abrego Garcia, an El Salvador national, was mistakenly deported earlier this year and sparked a national controversy about the Trump administration's immigration policies. He was since brought back to the U.S. and detained on criminial charges. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem spoke out against Abrego Garcia's release on social media. "Activist liberal judges have attempted to obstruct our law enforcement every step of the way in removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from our country. Today, we reached a new low with this publicity hungry Maryland judge mandating this illegal alien who is a MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator be allowed free," Noem wrote on X. "By ordering this monster loose on America’s streets, this judge has shown a complete disregard for the safety of the American people. We will not stop fighting till this Salvadoran man faces justice and is OUT of our country." Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D), who traveled to El Salvador in a push to bring Abrego Garcia back to the U.S., celebrated his release. "Despite Trump's efforts to defy our Constitution, the courts are upholding Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s due process rights. Following their ruling, I’m glad he’s finally returning to Maryland. He must be allowed to continue to assert his rights because when one person’s rights are denied, EVERYONE’S are at risk," Van Hollen said in a statement.
