As the FIFA World Cup ramps up in the United States, fans are bracing for extreme heat as a weather phenomenon called a "heat dome" threatens parts of the country.

What is a heat dome?

Dig deeper:

A head dome is a large area of high pressure that basically traps heat and humidity.

This can lead to dangerously high temperatures, especially this week during World Cup matches when heat indices (what temperatures "feel like") could reach up to 110 F (43.3 C), according to the National Weather Service.

Local perspective:

Three of the stadiums that will be hosting matches during the heat dome include Atlanta, Dallas and Houston.

The NWS issued an extreme heat watch beginning Wednesday and into Saturday for Philadelphia and surrounding regions.

An extreme heat warning is also in effect for Kansas City and other portions of west central Missouri until Friday night, with heat index values as high as 105 F to 110 F (40.6 C to 43.3 C) expected.

The New York City area could see near-record high temperatures of up to 109 F (42.8 C) with little respite overnight. An extreme heat watch will be in effect from Wednesday afternoon to Saturday evening.

The heat index in Boston and much of southern New England could skyrocket to 111 F (43.9 C), with the weather warning starting Wednesday morning.

What they're saying:

"This level of heat can be deadly for those without adequate cooling and hydration," the NWS said, adding that it could also impact transportation and electrical and water systems.

What you can do:

Stay hydrated.

Unfortunately, beer doesn’t count.

Alcohol actually accelerates dehydration, so, if you plan to partake in World Cup festivities, make sure to drink lots of water in addition to any alcoholic beverages.

And, if possible, try to stay in air-conditioned or shaded areas.
