Utah firefighters helped save millions of bees after a truck carrying the insects broke down on the side of a highway Wednesday.

Dig deeper:

While mechanics worked to fix the truck, Millcreek-Municipal Government Firefighters in Millcreek, Utah, kept the bees cool in from the summer heat by spraying misting the truck with a hose.

Temperatures were unseasonably hot that day, officials said, and the bees were at risk of dying if the truck stayed parked in the sun for a long time.

By the numbers:

The truck was carrying approximately 480 hives and each contained a hive that contained between 40,000 and 60,000 honey bees, according to a post published to the Unified Fire Authority’s Facebook account.

What they're saying:

"We’re happy to report no firefighters were stung during the operation!" the post read.
