Meta’s artificial intelligence image generator, or Muse Image, allows anyone to take images, even from your public Instagram account, and create AI-generated images.

Any users who are on private or are under 18 will be excluded from the feature, a spokesperson told the New York Times.

What is Muse Image?

Dig deeper:

Muse Image, which is integrated into its Meta AI chatbot, can interpret detailed prompts, use photos as inputs and let users edit generated images directly through sketches or annotations, according to Meta.

Social media backlash

Why you should care:

Critics took to social media asking how they could opt out of the feature and admonished the company for lack of consent.

One user said the new feature was "a privacy landmine waiting to detonate," according to a New York Times report.

Others shared step-by-step instructions on how to turn off the feature.

How to opt out

What you can do:

There are several ways to opt out of this new feature, the easiest being to put your account on private.

For users who want to continue keeping their account public, take these steps to opt out of the Muse Image feature:

  • Go into your Instagram settings and activity (the three little bars on the top right of your profile)
  • Scroll down to "sharing and reuse"
  • There should be a section labeled "Allow people to create with and reuse your content"
  • There are 2 separate toggles for "posts" and "reels" which you can toggle off
