Senate halts immigration package

President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund is facing growing backlash from members of his own party and has stalled a vote on his immigration enforcement bill. The proposed $1.78 billion settlement fund, called the “Truth and Justice Commission,” would use taxpayer money to compensate Trump allies who claim they were targeted by the “weaponization of government.” Critics, including some Republicans, have raised concerns over the potential payouts and the scope of the proposal. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has also declined to rule out payments to the nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
