Trump approval appears to slip amid gas price spike

LiveNOW’s Mike Pache is speaking with Semafor Congressional Bureau Chief, Burgess Everett, about a number of top political headlines that continue to impact President Donald Trump and his administration.

New poll results show President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating at a new high as the Iran war fuels higher prices and economic uncertainty.

According to the latest Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, that could spell trouble for Republicans in November’s midterm elections.

Trump’s Post-ABC-Ipsos poll results

By the numbers:

The poll puts Trump’s overall approval at 37%, 2 percentage points lower than in February. His overall disapproval is at 62%, the highest he’s seen in his two terms in office.

Republican support for Trump remains strong at 85%, while 56% Republican-leaning independents say they approve of the president’s job performance. According to The Washington Post, that’s a new low for right-leaning independents. Among independents, his approval rating is 25%.

Trump approval dips on economic issues

Dig deeper:

Americans are also souring on Trump’s handling of the economy, one of the key issues where Trump has historically seen higher approval ratings. The Iran war has sent gas prices soaring, fueling higher inflation and pushing up the cost of living.

The consumer price index climbed 3.3% in March from a year ago, and inflation is slightly higher than the 3% that Trump inherited upon returning to the White House last year.

The poll, which surveyed 2,560 U.S. adults from April 24-28, found 34% of Americans approve of how Trump is handling economic issues, while 33% approve of the Iran war.

Those numbers are even lower in the latest poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That poll showed a 30% approval rating for Trump on the economy, with 32% of people polled approving of the war against Iran.

The other side:

Democrats gained a little ground on the economy in the latest poll, but overall Americans are split: 34% say they trust Republicans, 33% say they trust Democrats, and the rest say they trust neither or both.

What does this mean for the midterms?

SCOTUS ruling could impact congressional maps

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued a ruling that limits the use of race when states look to draw congressional maps. LiveNOW from FOX's Ryan Schmelz spoke with Josh Rultenburg, author of Draw the Line in Ohio, about what this means for the next election cycle.

Big picture view:

Six months ahead of the midterm elections, polling shows Trump’s low approval rating as a liability for the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the House and Senate. The Post-ABC-Ipsos poll found Democrats have a 5-point advantage in the House elections, up from a two-point lead in February and October, but that doesn’t factor in states’ efforts to redraw their congressional maps.
