One year in: Poll reveals how Americans feel about Trump's return to White House

Less than half of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s performance after he completed a year in office for his second term. 

In a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC, a smaller percentage of respondents approve of his performance in the White House. Trump’s approval rating on immigration, one of his key issues, has also dipped since he took office.

Here’s what Americans are saying about Trump’s over performance as president.

Only 4 in 10 Americans consistently approved of Trump's performance

The new AP-NORC poll from January revealed that roughly 4 in 10 Americans approve of President Trump’s performance in office.

Early in his first term, 42% of Americans approved of how he was overseeing the presidency. About half of respondents believe Trump is mostly focusing on the wrong priorities one year into his second term, compared to 2 in 10 who believe he’s mostly focused on the right priorities. 

And another 2 in 10 say his priorities on prominent issues have been about an even mix, while 14% say they don't have an opinion.

Trump handling of economy receives low rating

Only 37% of Americans approve of how President Donald Trump is managing the economy. The poll noted that Trump’s approval rating on this issue in his first term changed. 

But roughly 6 in 10 Americans say Trump has done more to hurt the cost of living in his second term, while only 2 in 10 respondents say he’s done more to help, compared to 25%, who say he hasn't made an impact.

Americans' views on Trump’s handling of immigration have dropped

Local perspective:

According to the poll, only 38% of respondents support how President Donald Trump is handling immigration. The new poll was conducted Jan. 8–11, shortly after the death of Renee Good, who was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis.

While 45% say Trump has helped immigration and border security "a lot" or "a little" in his second term in the White House. However, roughly 2 in 10 Democrats say he has helped on this issue.

Moreover, roughly 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of how Trump is managing the issue of foreign policy, and 56% of respondents think Trump has "gone too far" in using the U.S. military to intervene in other countries.

Trump’s handling of foreign policy not favored by Americans 

Big picture view:

President Donald Trump has taken wide-ranging actions related to foreign policy, like pushing to control Greenland and overseeing the military capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

And these moves have not been supported by Americans, with 6 in 10 respondents saying they disapprove of how Trump is managing the issue of foreign policy, compared to 56% who admit Trump has "gone too far" in using the U.S. military to intervene in other countries.
