President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped from the higher levels it held during his first several months during his second stint in the White House.

Gallup released a new poll that shows that 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s overall job performance after he received 43% or higher during the first five months of 2025.

The analytics and advisory firm gathered the data for the poll using telephone interviews conducted by ReconMR between Aug. 1-20, 2025, with a random sample of 1,094 Americans 18 years old and older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Less than 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy

By the numbers:

President Donald Trump’s current 37% approval rating on the economy is 15 points below his average of 52% on that issue from 2017 to 2020, according to Gallup.

The poll found that Americans admit that current economic conditions in the U.S. are "poor." While nearly 50% of Americans rated the economy as poor in October 2024, prior to the November election, that number dipped to 40% in January and 31% in June, but it has since climbed back to 38%.

Separately, between 20% and 29% of people during this time have described economic conditions as "excellent" or "good," while the number of Americans characterizing economic conditions as "only fair" has ranged from 29% to 46%.

The poll also noted that Americans’ view of the economy has varied, with the number of people saying the economy is "getting better" ranging between 32% and 38% since October 2024.

Meanwhile, Gallup’s new poll shows that 54% of Americans saying it’s a bad time to find a quality job, slightly improved from the 58% of people saying this in April but still worse compared to responses in January about their job outlook, when 48% said it was a good time and 45% a bad time.

Trump receives low rating on education

Why you should care:

As the new school year begins, only 38% of Americans say they approve of President Donald Trump’s management of education, including 41% of parents of children attending K-12 school.  Gallup noted that Trump’s rating on education is similar to three Gallup readings taken during his first term in office, when they ranged from 35% to 44%.

Americans dissatisfied with the direction of the country

Dig deeper:

Approximately 31% of Americans who currently say they are satisfied with the direction of the nation is higher than the 26% recorded in late October, as well as the average 22% throughout Biden’s presidency. However, it has changed after reaching 38% in May, the highest of Trump’s second term.

Moreover, there is a substantial difference on where political parties stand on this issue, with 76% of Republicans saying they are satisfied with the direction of the country compared to less than 1% of Democrats.
