Painted Tree Boutiques, a chain of stores that leased space to small vendors, has abruptly closed all of its more than 60 locations in the U.S.

Why is Painted Tree closing?
What we know:
According to reports, Painted Tree announced the closure in an email to vendors. Its last day of business was Monday, April 13.
What they're saying:
"Unfortunately, all Painted Tree locations are now closed," the San Antonio Painted Tree location posted on Instagram Wednesday. "We just received this news at 11:00 AM Central Time and had no prior notice that this was going to happen. This will deeply impact many small businesses in San Antonio that relied on this income.

"Please keep all affected vendors and small businesses in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this unexpected change."
In the email to vendors and employees, Painted Tree blamed rising costs, shifting market conditions and the changing retail landscape.
"This decision has not come lightly, and it represents the end of a chapter that has meant everything to us," the message said. "Despite our best efforts and our community’s unwavering support, we have not been able to overcome. We are heartbroken by this outcome."
What we don't know:
Painted Tree did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but reports say the company is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Painted Tree is an Arkansas-based company that bought large spaces – many of them former Bed, Bath & Beyond stores – and leased booth space to vendors for a percentage of their sales. Most of the vendors sold crafts and handmade goods.
It had more than 60 locations across the U.S.
