Nintendo's Switch 2: What we know about its 2025 release

Nintendo is releasing a new game console this year and gave a sneak peek of what gamers can expect when it hits store shelves. 

The video game giant made an announcement Thursday about its latest offering, but did not provide details on the console or the official release date.

What is the Nintendo Switch 2?

The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, will play Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. 

Nintendo debuted a promotional video for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is a larger version of the original Switch but with a similar look. Switch 2 has an additional USB-C port and the system controllers, called Joy-Cons, now attach to the side of the main unit rather than slide in.

Nintendo tells the Associated Press that some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. According to the AP, Nintendo will offer more information about the system during the company’s April Nintendo Direct event. 

What's next:

"Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events are going to be hosted in several countries so gamers can test the new console.

The company tells the AP that these events are planned for cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris starting in April, and ticket registration for those events begins Friday.
