According to News Center Maine, weather conditions for the hikers were not ideal. Hikers later told investigators they saw the pair continuing their climb as the weather worsened. The summit was blasted by wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour, along with rain, sleet, and snow. Wind chills fell into the teens, increasing the danger of hypothermia, according to the outlet.

The outlet reported it's believed the pair veered off course and slid downhill uncontrollably, possibly crashing into boulders.
