Kelly Ripa hosts 'Live' with husband Mark Consuelos
After Ryan Seacrest announced he would be leaving "Live with Kelly and Ryan," it was announced that Kelly Ripa would be joined by her husband Mark Consuelos as the new permanent co-host.
NEW YORK - Kelly Ripa was absent from "Live With Kelly and Mark" due to a "painful" oral surgery, her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos revealed on Monday.
During Monday’s show, Consuelos revealed that Ripa had undergone gum graft surgery, sidelining the daytime TV host from her daily work duties.

"Kelly sends her love," Consuelos, 55, told his guest host Nick Jonas. "Kelly had a little bit – well, it’s not a little – she had a gum graft surgery."
He added, "Her dentist said five years ago, ‘You can do it in about five years.’ And she joked, ‘I didn’t think I’d still be on the air in five years!’ "
Consuelos revealed her lengthy recovery process includes not talking.

"Wow. That’s got to be the hardest thing she’s ever done," Jonas joked.
Describing Ripa as "such a great conversationalist," Consuelos hinted he might be having trouble getting the talk show host to follow doctor's orders.
"I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions," he said.
What is gum graft surgery?

According to Cleveland Clinic, gum graft surgery is a dental procedure for treating thinning gums or gum recession. Gum grafting covers exposed teeth roots and adds volume to your gum line, improving overall oral health.
Recovery usually takes one to two weeks, but it may take longer. The medical center noted that gum grafting can lower a person’s risk of severe gum disease.

The "All My Children" actor said the surgery was especially alarming because Ripa rarely complains about pain, making this recovery stand out from any previous trip to the dentist.
"Yeah, it’s painful," he told Jonas, adding, "But she famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad."
Ripa is not expected to return to "Live" for the next week, a representative for the show confirmed to People.
