Indiana grocery store shooting leaves 3 dead, 2 officers injured

ELKHART, Ind. - Two people were fatally shot and a person believed to be the shooter died at a grocery store Monday in northern Indiana.

What we know:
According to officials, the shooter who opened fire inside the Elkhart, Indiana supermarket on Monday evening is dead after killing two people and injuring two police officers.
Two officers sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter and were transported to an area hospital where they were listed in stable condition.
What they're saying:
Elkhart Police Department spokesperson Jessica McBrier said during a media briefing that two people were pronounced dead inside the store and that the two officers "sustained gunfire," but were in stable condition at a hospital.
She said police were interviewing witnesses and that there was no danger to the public. No further information was immediately released.
"It’s a sad day in Elkhart," McBrier said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected."
The District Attorney’s homicide unit is handling the investigation. McBrier said there is no further threat to the community.
Elkhart is about 15 miles east of South Bend, Indiana.
