Following heavy rainfall across Southern Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency, authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to be available to provide support for emergency flood operations as areas across the state experience extreme flood conditions. The Minnesota National Guard is in close communication with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management team to support communities across the state.

In the Midwest where South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota meet, floodwaters rose through the weekend. In northwest Iowa, 13 rivers flooded the area, said Eric Tigges of Clay County emergency management. Entire neighborhoods ? and at least one entire town ? were evacuated, and the town of Spencer imposed a curfew Sunday for the second night in a row after flooding that surpassed the record set in 1953.

The South Fork and Salt fires continue to burn in New Mexico, leaving a trail of destruction in their path. Some 1,400 structures have been burned, and several more remain threatened. The blazes have burned a combined 23,000 acres and remain 0% contained.

Tropical Storm Alberto became the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season Wednesday, and as the system churned over the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, it blasted parts of Texas, Louisiana and Mexico with heavy rainfall, storm surge flooding and gusty winds. At last report from the National Hurricane Center, Alberto was a minimal tropical storm with winds mainly around 40 mph. However, its influence stretched hundreds of miles.

A massive brush fire broke out near the community of Gorman in northern Los Angeles County. Cal Fire says the fire has burned 15,610 acres and is 8% contained.
