Luigi Mangion pretrial day 2
Today marks the second day of pretrial hearings for Luigi Mangione, as his attorneys continue fighting to have several key pieces of evidence thrown out before the trial begins. It has been nearly one year since Mangione allegedly killed UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. Several witnesses testified yesterday as the defense argued that some of the most incriminating evidence tying Mangione to Thompson’s murder was illegally obtained, focusing largely on Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania after a multi-day manhunt. The court reviewed surveillance video of his arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona last December, which occurred after the restaurant’s manager called 911 when customers recognized Mangione and believed he matched the shooter. The courtroom also listened to that 911 call. The defense claims Mangione was not read his Miranda rights until about 20 minutes after police first encountered him, and therefore anything he said before that should be suppressed. Officers additionally found a 3-D printed gun, a silencer, and a journal—allegedly detailing a plan to target an insurance executive—in his backpack, but his legal team argues that search was unlawful. Prosecutors dispute that claim, and now a judge will decide whether the evidence will be allowed at trial.
