DOJ, X hunt hackers targeting hundreds of thousands of users

The U.S. Justice Department is working with Elon Musk’s X to identify those behind an attempted password-recovery attack that targeted hundreds of thousands of users this week, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Blanche said in a statement on X that "sophisticated cyber criminals" attempted the attack, but the platform disrupted it. He did not provide additional details about the incident.
X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident comes as companies worldwide face a rise in AI-driven cyberattacks and ransomware, which can steal sensitive data and disrupt operations, Reuters reported.
The White House said in July that it was launching a coordination group for AI developers and critical infrastructure operators to share information about cybersecurity vulnerabilities identified by AI systems.
