12 dead as bus overturns in South Africa
On Tuesday, a bus overturned on a South African highway and passengers were thrown out of it, killing at least 12 people and injuring 45 in Johannesburg, emergency services said. Emergency crews were trying to lift the bus back onto its wheels to see if any more victims were trapped underneath it, said William Nthladi, a spokesperson for the city’s Ekurhuleni Emergency Management. “On arrival we found patients lying across the road,” Nthladi said. The bodies of some of the victims lay on the highway near the bus and were covered with silver blankets. Two bodies were still trapped in the wreckage, Nthladi said. Handbags, a lunch box and a water bottle were visible among the belongings. “We are lost for words. This is a disaster,” said Andile Mngwevu, a local city councillor who went to the scene. “To see so many bodies lying around is quite saddening, and the city really feels for the families who would have expected to see their loved ones return home later today. Our hearts are extremely heavy right now.”

Hamas called it part of Israel?s ?starvation policy.? Israel last week suspended supplies of goods to the territory of more than 2 million Palestinians, an echo of the siege it imposed in the earliest days of the war. Israel is pressing the militant group to accept an extension of the first phase of their ceasefire. That phase ended last weekend. North Korea fires several ballistic missiles
On Monday, North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea, South Korea?s military said. This came hours after South Korean and U.S. troops kicked off their annual combined drills, which the North views as an invasion rehearsal. South Korea?s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile firings, North Korea?s fifth missile launch event this year, were detected from the North?s southwestern Hwanghae province. It called the weapons close-range but didn?t say how far they flew. The military said South Korea bolstered its surveillance posture and is closely coordinating with the United States. Earlier Monday, the South Korean and U.S. militaries began their annual Freedom Shield command post exercise, their first major combined training of President Donald Trump?s second term. The allies have already been engaging in diverse field training exercises in connection with the Freedom Shield training.
