The Artemis II astronauts are racing to set a new distance record Monday from Earth on a lunar fly-around promising magnificent views of the far side never seen before by eye.

The head of intelligence for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Maj. Gen. Majid Khademi, was killed, according to Iranian state media. Israel claimed the killing Monday.  Israel and the United States carried out a wave of attacks on Iran on Monday, killing more than 25 people. Iran responded with missile fire on Israel and its Gulf Arab neighbors as U.S. President Donald Trump's deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz loomed. 

NASA has now announced that the Artemis II astronauts and Orion spacecraft are more than two-thirds of the distance to the moon's lunar surface as their historic lunar mission continues. Artemis II will reach the moon on Monday, April 6, 2026 where the crew will then participate in a six-hour lunar flyby. That's when the Orion spacecraft's main cabin windows will be pointed to the moon. The mission is the first crewed test flight of the Orion spacecraft, working to evaluate NASA's capabilities for deep space travel.

Currently, the lunar flyby is scheduled for Monday afternoon, April 6, 2026, when Orion's main window will be pointed towards the moon's surface. President Trump wrote that the "respected colonel" is injured but "will be just fine," adding that he took refuge "in the treacherous mountains of Iran." A second crew member was rescued earlier. President Donald Trump on Sunday made new, expletive-laden threats to escalate strikes on Iran and its infrastructure if it doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz by his deadline, after American forces rescued an aviator whose Iran-downed plane fell behind enemy lines.
