WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court earlier this month temporarily blocked a nationwide settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma that would shield members of the Sackler family who own the company from civil lawsuits over the toll of opioids. The justices agreed to a request from the Biden administration to put the brakes on an agreement reached last year with state and local governments. In addition, the high court will hear arguments before the end of the year over whether the settlement can proceed. The deal would allow the company to emerge from bankruptcy as a different entity, with its profits used to fight the opioid epidemic. Members of the Sackler family would contribute up to $6 billion.

13,000 US autoworkers go on strike

DETROIT (AP) ? About 13,000 U.S. auto workers stopped making vehicles and went on strike Friday after their leaders couldn?t bridge a giant gap between union demands in contract talks and what Detroit?s three automakers are willing to pay. Members of the United Auto Workers union began picketing at a General Motors assembly plant in Wentzville, Missouri; a Ford factory in Wayne, Michigan, near Detroit; and a Stellantis Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio. It is the first time in the union?s 88-year history that all three companies were targeted simultaneously.
