A suspect is dead in a Virginia school shooting that left an adult injured; a man was convicted of killing a local activist and other top headlines.
WAYNESBORO, Va. - A suspect is dead, and an adult is injured after a shooting at a Virginia elementary school on Wednesday morning.
What we know:
Police responded to Westwood Hills Elementary in Waynesboro — about three hours south of Washington, D.C. — around 10 a.m.
According to officers, the suspect forced his way inside the school and shot a victim before turning the gun on himself.
Officials did not share any information about a motive in the shooting.
All the students and staff were safely evacuated from the school, and no children were hurt, police said.
"Today’s the day every school system hopes they never have to deal with," said Dr. Jeffrey Cassell, Waynesboro Public Schools superintendent. "Our safety and security protocols and procedures worked. Staff notified law enforcement immediately, and our school executed lockdown procedures."
The shooting was an isolated incident, according to officers.
City officials said the school will be closed on Thursday.
Video from the scene showed several emergency vehicles outside the school. Students and families were being reunited at a nearby church, assistant schools superintendent Ryan Barber said.
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she was monitoring the situation, noting her heart was with the students, families, teachers and staff. She also thanked first responders assisting at the scene.
Waynesboro is about 96 miles northwest of Richmond.
