Jaye P. Morgan, a pop singer who became a fixture on television variety and game shows, died at 94.
What we know:
Morgan died Monday of natural causes in Longview, Washington, according to her longtime attorney and friend, Mark Sendroff.
The backstory:
Born Mary Margaret Morgan in Mancos, Colorado, she began performing at age 3 as part of the Morgan Family vaudeville troupe. After the group disbanded in 1945, she built a solo career that made her one of the top female recording artists of the 1950s. In 1955 alone, she scored five hits including "That’s All I Want From You" and "The Longest Walk." She also charted with Perry Como and Eddy Arnold, earning multiple Top 20 singles.
Big picture view:
Morgan later became a regular on talk shows hosted by Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett and Mike Douglas. She also appeared on several television shows, including "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island." However, she may be most remembered for her time on popular variety show "The Gong Show," where she had a notorious moment when she exposed her breast during a taping, a defining moment for the chaotic spirit of the show which helped lead to its cancellation in 1978.
Her film credits include "The All-American Boy," "Loose Shoes," "The Gong Show Movie," "Night Patrol" and the George Clooney-directed, semi-biographical film "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."
Morgan is survived by her son, Paul Kane, as well as her nephew Duke Morgan Spencer and niece Peggy Sue Spencer, with whom she had been living.
What they're saying:
"Jaye P. Morgan’s devil-may-care ad libs on television game shows have probably made her more famous as a personality than as a singer," The New York Times wrote in 1984. "But the same kooky recklessness that inspires Miss Morgan’s remarks is also a part of her musical sensibility."
