Summer is one of the best times to explore America's great outdoors, and from soaring granite cliffs to rugged Atlantic coastlines, some of the country's most iconic campgrounds offer unforgettable adventures for travelers looking to reconnect with nature.

Many of these destinations are located within national parks that have been protected for generations, giving campers the opportunity to experience landscapes that have inspired visitors for more than a century.

Yosemite Valley, for example, was first preserved under the Yosemite Grant signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864 before becoming Yosemite National Park in 1890.

James Kaiser, a Montana-based author of several national park guidebooks, said each campground offers a unique way to experience some of America's most spectacular scenery.

"North Pines in Yosemite and Watchman in Zion offer breathtaking scenery — even by national park standards," Kaiser told Fox News Digital.

"Both are situated beneath towering cliffs, and you'll enjoy a spectacular light show at golden hour. When it's time for bed, you'll sleep under a glittering blanket of stars."

He added that while campgrounds like Blackwoods, Mather and Many Glacier are nestled within forests, they're just steps away from some of the nation's most unforgettable landscapes.

Here are five of the best camping spots to add to your summer travel plans.

1. North Pines Campground, Yosemite National Park (California)

Set in the heart of Yosemite Valley, North Pines Campground is one of the park's most sought-after places to camp — and for good reason.

Surrounded by towering granite cliffs, waterfalls and ancient giant sequoias, the campground places visitors close to many of Yosemite's most famous attractions. Campsites, which can sell out within minutes of becoming available, also offer easy access to the Merced River, where visitors can enjoy rafting during the summer months.

Popular activities include hiking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, horseback riding and photography.

2. Mather Campground, Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)

Located just steps from the Grand Canyon's South Rim, Mather Campground gives visitors easy access to one of the world's most recognizable natural wonders.

The campground features 327 campsites, each equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring and parking space. Flush toilets and drinking water are available, making it a convenient base for exploring the park.

Campers can spend their days hiking scenic trails, catching sunrise and sunset views over the canyon or taking in the dramatic desert landscape.

3. Watchman Campground, Zion National Park (Utah)

Situated along the Virgin River, Watchman Campground is surrounded by Zion's towering sandstone cliffs, which glow shades of red and orange during sunrise and sunset.

Named after the prominent Watchman Peak, the campground offers convenient access to hiking trails, biking routes, ranger-led programs and world-class stargazing.

During the warmer months, many visitors cool off in the nearby river after spending the day exploring the park.

4. Many Glacier Campground, Glacier National Park (Montana)

For campers looking to experience alpine scenery, Many Glacier Campground delivers spectacular mountain views, crystal-clear lakes and abundant wildlife.

Located on the east side of the Continental Divide, the campground is surrounded by Douglas fir, lodgepole pine and quaking aspen forests that provide welcome shade during the summer.

Visitors can enjoy hiking, backpacking, fishing and wildlife viewing while exploring one of Glacier National Park's most scenic regions.

5. Blackwoods Campground, Acadia National Park (Maine)

Acadia National Park offers a distinctly different camping experience, combining forested campsites with easy access to Maine's rugged Atlantic coastline.

Located on Mount Desert Island, Blackwoods Campground is within a short walk of the ocean and serves as an ideal home base for exploring granite peaks, lakes, beaches and scenic carriage roads.

Popular summer activities include hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, coastal walks and narrated boat tours, making Acadia one of the East Coast's premier camping destinations.

Whether you're looking to camp beneath Yosemite's granite walls, wake up beside the Grand Canyon, explore Glacier's alpine wilderness or watch the sunrise along Maine's rocky coast, these destinations rank among the best camping spots to experience across the United States this summer.
