American diplomat killed in Myanmar, Thai woman arrested

An American diplomat was found dead in Myanmar’s largest city, the U.S. State Department told The Associated Press. 

Police detained a Thai woman in connection with the investigation, the AP added, citing members of the diplomatic community in Yangon.

What happened in the incident involving the American diplomat?

What we know:

The unidentified diplomat, who was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, the biggest city in Myanmar, was found dead two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel. 

This hotel is popular with diplomats, people in the business world and international visitors, and is located near the American Embassy, according to three people in the diplomatic community in Myanmar, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

The individuals also shared with the AP that authorities are treating the case as a potential homicide and have a Thai woman in custody. 

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry explained to the AP that it has provided consular assistance to the woman in custody and informed her family.

Authorities have not released the identity of the American diplomat or the woman in custody.
